Room volunteers among Catholic Women’s Award recipients

Monday, August 10, 2015

On Saturday, Aug. 2, several St. Louis women were awarded the Catholic Women’s Award. The honor is given annually to one woman from each parish in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, who is nominated by the pastor or parish council.

This year’s award theme was “comforter/nurturer,” and many of the recipients have connections to Room at the Inn, which has been blessed with their time, kindness and support.

Room at the Inn would like to congratulate the following volunteers for their well-deserved recognition:

– Rose Vierdag: long-time Sisters of Divine Providence Associate, who volunteers every year at the Breakfast with the INN Crowd fundraiser. Vierdag also formerly volunteered at the day site shelter. She belongs to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church parish in Florissant.

– Carole Hailip: Night Site coordinator for Immaculate Conception Church in Maplewood.

– Jean Kleypas: long-time Room at the Inn supporter. Kleypas belongs to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ferguson, a former Night Site for Room at the Inn.

Congratulations to all of these wonderful women and the work they do to make St. Louis a better place. Thank you for sharing your kindness and efforts with the clients of Room at the Inn.

Webster Groves Christian Holds Book Fair for Children

Monday, August 10, 2015

Webster Groves Christian Church, a long-time Night Site and supporter of Room at the Inn, will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, August 10, thru the weekend.  The book fair will be held in conjunction with an art show featuring the work of Richard Bernal, a well-known children’s book illustrator.

(Click on this link for more information)

WGCC is located at 1320 W. Lockwood Ave. in Webster Groves.

WGCC will be encouraging customers and participants to donate toward the purchase of books and credits for books for kids in the area who don’t have easy access to resources, including Room at the Inn’s homeless client children.
WGCC Reverend Dr. Jeff Moore said his congregation decided to host this event because many children in the St. Louis area do not have the opportunity to purchase new books.

“Reading is such an important way to learn, grow, and build relationships of trust, and we are hopeful that our efforts will help to place new books and opportunities for reading into the lives of children and their families,” Rev. Moore said. “Room at the Inn families, like so many families in the St. Louis area, are facing many challenges, and we hope that this might be one way we can partner with them to strengthen the learning and development of their children.  We’re hopeful that Room Night Site congregations will come to the book fair and purchase books to use and share in their Night Site programs, as well.”

The event will include Scholastic Books for grades K-8.  Each evening will include opportunities for interaction, reading, and fun. In addition to hosting illustrator Richard Bernal on Wednesday evening, WGCC will be offering – throughout the week – crafts, activities, reading times, and story discussions.

“Please encourage friends and neighbors to attend,” Rev. Moore said. “All proceeds we receive from purchases and donations will go toward new books for children in St. Louis – especially Room at the Inn families or night sites.”

Room at the Inn would like to thank Rev. Moore and the staff and volunteers of Webster Groves Christian Church for putting together this wonderful event. Thank you for helping us give the homeless children of St. Louis a future and a purpose.

Volunteers Needed for Homeless Count

Volunteers Needed for Homeless Count

Monday, July 20, 2015

Two times each year, the St. Louis County Department of Human Services, along with other social service agencies, take a day to count people in our community who are homeless.

Volunteers count individuals who are in shelters and using various shelter providers. The county also relies on a team of volunteers who stop by places throughout the area where homeless people tend to congregate (Metrolink stations, libraries, etc.).

In 2014, the count listed a total of 134 homeless or unsheltered people.

“This point-in-time count is essential for understanding the need in our community, but it’s also an important opportunity to link people with resources that can help them,” said Chris Hotard, Night Site Coordinator for Room at the Inn.

In the past, St Louis County had regularly brought together more than 100 volunteers to participate in the point-in-time count, but over time this number has been declining and recently has been around 25 people.

“Our goal is for us to pull together 75 volunteers to be able to make up this difference, but we really need a lot of help for us to hit that number,” Hotard said, urging volunteers to step up for this task.

The count will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, July 30. Volunteers can participate in either or both counts for the entire time or part of the shift.

Volunteers will be paired into groups of three to four people and will be driven by either county employees or police officers. Training will be provided on the day of the event. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

“This project is a really important part of helping our service system to meet the needs of our community,” Hotard said.

To volunteer, please contact Chris Hotard as soon as possible at 314-209-9198 or via email at chotard@roomstl.org

Charity Golf Outing is back!

Get your spot TODAY

Monday, July 13, 2015

Today, we invite you to stand up for the homeless women, children and families of the St. Louis area and, in so doing, receive recognition for your participation in our Second Annual Charity Golf Outing for Room at the Inn. The event is a collaboration between Webster Groves Christian Church and Westborough Country Club to raise awareness and support for the homeless in the area.

(Click here to see pictures from last year’s event)

As a sponsor, player, or donor, you will make a great difference in the lives of the clients served by Room at the Inn, an emergency shelter for homeless women and families, in St. Louis County.

Room at the Inn provides our clients with safe, clean shelter, food, transportation, and supportive services while they undertake the difficult task of regaining self-sufficiency. We serve about 200 people each year, about half of whom are children learning to be productive adults, and the other half who are single mothers or single women working to overcome large obstacles.

These are people from our own community who are working to regain control of their futures.

The Second Annual Charity Golf Outing for Room at the Inn will be held at the Westborough Country Club in Glendale, Missouri, on Monday, October 5, 2015, with registration starting at 10 a.m., and a shotgun start of 12 p.m. (noon). The event includes lunch, a golf scramble, a raffle, dinner and other fun activities.

Click here to see our our sponsor, donor and player form for our Charity Golf Outing.

You can also skip the stamp and register or place our sponsorship online. Click here to register through our secure website.

We hope you will not only find your contributions of value, but also view them as conduits to get yourself, your company, and/or your organization recognized for helping the area’s homeless population.

Boeing awards grant for client programs

Monday, July 6, 2015

(BRIDGETON, Mo.) Room at the Inn is pleased to announce it has recently received a grant from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis.

The grant will be used for Room at the Inn’s Client Self-Sufficiency program – an essential part of our mission in getting homeless families back into housing.

All clients who become residents of Room complete a Self-Sufficiency Matrix, which helps them rate themselves and the family unit in different areas or aspects of their life.

All of these factors contribute to the family’s ability to obtain and/or maintain housing.

Throughout their stay at Room, clients use the matrix to identify three to four areas where they would like to progress in their journey to self-sufficiency. First, clients rate their current condition on a scale of 1-5. Then, with the help of our Client Coordinator, clients draft a goal planning sheet with steps toward improvement.

This system helps clients recognize their strengths and weaknesses, providing positive feedback along the way in the areas where they are gaining strength.

Room at the Inn could not exist without the support of foundations and businesses that choose to make an investment in our endeavors. We want to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis for making it possible to help families in our community as they journey from homelessness to stability.

The Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis is a unique, employee-owned and directed giving program that allows employees to support the needs of their local communities via tax-deductible recurring payroll deductions or one-time gifts.
